With tensions increasing, especially since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, Belleville City Council is supporting a resolution from the Town of Aurora calling on all levels of government to strengthen their available tools to deny inciteful speech online or in person.
The letter from Aurora council, addressed to Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, says uncertainty and unsafe feelings are rising across the country.
Councillor Garnet Thompson says people are being disrespectful on the street, online and even in parliament.
“Words are being used that shouldn’t be used. We’re accusing people of things that we shouldn’t be accusing. And I think that this is a, a good step to show our diversity and to let people know that we’re sick and tired of all the calling, name calling.”
The resolution also encourages diverse local leaders of faith to bring the community together to promote peace, healing and understanding during this difficult time.
