The Belleville Senators and Cleveland Monsters played scoreless hockey for 37 minutes and 29 seconds.
After that it was all Cleveland as they skated to a 5-1 win over the B-Sens in the first of two games at the Rocket Mortgage Field House.
The Monsters would build a 5-0 lead before Garrett Pilon broke up a shutout bid by Jet Greaves with his ninth of the season.
Belleville forward Matthew Highmore says the game turned quickly late in the second period.
The Monsters lead the AHL North Division with 31 points. Belleville is in fourth place with 24.
The B-Sens and Monsters meet again Friday night.
