While warming centres in Belleville and Trenton are already open, Bancroft’s warming centre remains a work in progress.
The facility to provide a warm space for the homeless was scheduled to open Friday but is not ready yet.
A mobile medical unit that was purchased during the pandemic in 2020 to serve as an emergency isolation centre for unsheltered individuals is being retrofitted.
However, it must be moved from Belleville to Bancroft, and Hastings County officials say arrangements are still being made with a transport company to move the unit.
The county says logistics to relocate the large unit are challenging and multi-faceted.
The shelter, which will be located off Cleak Avenue, will have two bathrooms and four sleeping quarters and will serve as the town’s warming centre for the next two years until a more permanent solution can be found.
Hastings County has had difficulty finding a suitable location for a warming centre in the Town of Bancroft.
Until the mobile unit is ready, Hastings County encourages individuals in Bancroft who find themselves in an emergency homeless situation to call the local Community and Human Services office at 613-332-3410 or 1-866-569-1941. Outside of business hours individuals can contact After-Hours
