The Children’s Safety Village in Belleville announced a new partnership with Elexicon Energy that will bring a new safety education program for youth in the Quinte region.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the village on Thursday to commemorate the occasion.
“They have been providing safety education to children, particularly in the Durham region where there is a safety village as well,” Executive Director for Children’s Safety Village, Bill Glisky, tells Quinte News.
“The fact that we get that level of expertise and that level of knowledge and that level of skill, teaching children in this area how to be safe around electricity, around electrical power lines, around all these things that we run into every day. It’s just a great opportunity and great a moment for us here at the village.”
The safety program will be similar to the one offered at Durham region’s Children’s Safety Village for children in Grades 1 to 3.
“It is fundamentally just teaching kids how electricity works, how it can be used properly, and how it can be dangerous,” Glisky said.
“Things we as adults often take for granted, around outlets, around power lines, things like that, but kids don’t know and kids are curious. So they need to be told and reminded in a way that teaches them there are dangers but there are also opportunities. They don’t need to be afraid. They need to be cautious. And that’s what we do here at the village.”
Glisky says the program is delivered through the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board and Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic District School Board. He says parents who are interested in having their kids take part in the program should reach out to their respective school board.
“Classes come in through field trips to engage in the program. So the best way for parents to get their kids involved is to talk to their schools and talk to their teachers.”
Children’s Safety Village Belleville says the new electrical safety program is the ninth distinct safety program offered at the village.
