The Hastings Prince Edward District School Board will go ahead and check into joining a “mass tort” legal action against the big social media companies Meta (Facebook, Instagram), TikTok and Snap.
Other school boards would be involved should the legal action go ahead after law firm Neinstein LLP finishes a confidential investigation with school board leadership on the perceived affects of learning what the use of social media has had on students.
The basis for action against social media companies is that they purposely design their sites to be addictive leading to students having various learning disabilities.
There will be no cost to the school board as there will be a retainer agreement and adverse costs insurance.
PA DAY MOVED DUE TO SOLAR ECLIPSE
A once in a lifetime total solar eclipse has caused the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board to make a change to its professional activity, or PA day, schedule.
There are concerns for students’ safety having to get home from schools on the afternoon of April 8 as the eclipse will plunge this part of the world into total darkness at 3:20 p.m. for about 3 minutes. The complete eclipse will occur between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. causing diminished levels of daylight as it progresses.
The Hasting Prince Edward school board has decided to move its April 12 PA day to the day of the eclipse on April 8 so students will not have to attend school on that day.
