The number of homeless people in Hastings County is on the rise. As of the end of September at least 166 people, most in Belleville, were known to be without a place to live.
That’s an almost 25% increase from mid-summer and the numbers are expected to rise.
At a meeting of Hastings County’s Community and Human Services Committee Wednesday, CAO Connor Dorey said there many problems causing homelessness.
“It could be someone fleeing from domestic violence that’s causing mental health concerns or that they’re unable to find housing that they can afford but there’s many instances where it’s multi-factored, not a single factor, that’s resulting in this situation.”
Of the at least 166 homeless people 114 of them have been without a place to live for six months or longer.
