The Green Task Force believes a FoodCycler composting program would work well in the City of Belleville.
Green Task Force Chair, Councillor Chris Malette says council will be asked to support a pilot project that will specifically involve multi-residential units.
Malette says most apartment buildings don’t currently have green bin organic recycling as landlords usually have to pay for such a service.
Over the last few years he says many residents have been asking for an alternative.
“People in apartment buildings, 99% of the landlords don’t want to pay to have that collection. They were wondering if there’s anything we could do for them and this seems like a solution.”
The FoodCycler is counter-top kitchen unit that converts organics into soil.
“Basically what it does is it composts food waste in a matter of hours, like overnight. It sort of heats it up and kind of cooks it like you would in a composter.”
It can then be used in gardens or flower boxes.
Several other municipalities have launched their own FoodCycler pilot projects, including Centre Hastings.
The Green Task Force has asked staff to prepare a report for council’s November 14 meeting asking that $15,000 from the operating budget be set aside for the pilot project.
