Quinte West City Council approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with the O.G. Buster Alyea Trust to create a Children’s Garden in Buster Alyea Park.
The proposed butterfly garden would be at the north-east corner of Quinte West City Hall.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be $250,000. Council has authorized the spending of $175,000 from the O.G Buster Alyea City reserve to help create the new garden. The rest will be covered by a fund within the O.G. Buster Alyea Trust.
City staff have estimated that the cost to maintain the garden would be $15,000 a year which would include weeding, watering, edging, and keeping up the annual maintenance.
The first year of maintenance costs will be covered by the installers of the garden.
The City of Quinte West will then incur the maintenance costs beginning in 2025.
As part of the resolution, council has directed staff to include funds and future year operating budgets to help support the maintenance and upkeep of the Children’s Garden.
