Hastings County’s Community Response Team is preparing for its second annual I-Think Challenge.
The challenge is in partnership with Centennial Secondary School, Bridge Street United Church and Grace Inn Shelter.
Students from the Grade 9 geography class at Centennial Secondary School will be participating in a walkabout from the school to the Bridge Street United Church and Hastings County Community and Human Services.
The students will then be able to ask questions about programs and services being offered to the vulnerable homeless population.
It will end with a tour of Grace Inn Shelter where students will be able to meet with shelter staff and look at emergency accommodations.
In the following week, students will then get together for their geography classes and help come up with local solutions to the community’s homelessness issues.
Speaking to the Hastings County Community and Human Services committee, Manager of Homelessness Initiatives and Prevention, Jamie Lynne Osmond, said that they are opening up the challenge to other schools.
“We did start just last year with Centennial but that’s because they approached us and we enjoyed the opportunity to go there,” Osmond explained
“So if we can partner with other area high schools, yes, we are looking at doing that for sure.”
