Prince Edward County Crown Attorney Lee Burgess is warning area residents of a scam attempt in the community.
Burgess says that multiple area residents have received calls advising that they are under investigation for money laundering. The victim would then be told they were being transferred to a local crown attorney’s office and given the contact numbers for a real local office.
The person they were transferred to would claim to be a crown attorney who worked at the office they were allegedly transferred to, and would ask victims for banking information.
The person claiming to be a crown attorney would always use the name and phone numbers of a real crown attorney, so when googling the details provided they would appear legitimate.
Burgess is reminding the public that these calls are always attempts at fraud. The crown attorney office will not make calls like this to the public, will never ask you for banking info or to transfer money, and does not conduct criminal investigations as that is the responsibility of police.
