Belleville Police had to deal with 17 emergency call hang-ups in a 24-hour period Tuesday into Wednesday.
Officers say someone would call the 911 operator, then hang up.
They are pleading with people to not make fake calls and if an accidental 911 call is made, please stay on the line.
There is no fine or penalty for accidentally making the call.
An officer may come to speak with you to ensure safety, however, there will be no punishment.
Prank calls take money, officers and resources away from real emergencies.
