Following in the footsteps of Prince Edward County and Quinte West, the City of Belleville is preparing to outsource its fire dispatch services.
At its meeting on Monday, Belleville City Council will be asked to accept a proposal from the City of Peterborough for the supply and delivery of dispatch services for Belleville Fire and Emergency Services over a five year term, with an option to renew.
The cost over the five year contract is $2.1 million.
Peterborough submitted the only qualified bid.
Belleville Fire provided dispatch for its own service and Quinte West, however, with federal legislation requiring all emergency dispatch centres to be running with Next Generation 911 technology by 2025, it was decided upgrading the technology was not feasible.
Quinte West and Prince Edward County both signed dispatch agreements with St. Catharines earlier this year.
If council accepts the proposal, there would be a several week transition process that would be finalized in 2024 with an exact date to be determined.
Council is also being asked to give pre-approval of $353,000 from the 2024 Operating Budget for the first year of the contract with the funding to be provided from taxation.
Belleville City Council meets at 4 p.m. at City Hall.
