Northumberland County awarded this year’s “Mayors’ Keep the County Clean Challenge” winners at its meeting on Wednesday.
The annual week-long litter clean-up challenge took place during Earth Week in April.
The townships of Alnwick Haldimand and Cramahe took home trophies for their efforts.
Alnwick Haldimand took home the title of “Highest Proportional Representation of Volunteers” with 5.9 per cent of the population participating in this year’s challenge.
Cramahe won the Hardest Working Volunteers award with a remarkable average of 25.7 kg of waste collected per volunteer.
From April 17 to 22, over 2,434 Northumberland County residents collected 19,020 kilograms of litter and illegally dumped materials. This year’s competition saw the fourth highest year on record for volunteer participation and litter collected, since the initiative started in 2008. The “Keep the County Clean Challenge” continues to support a clean environment in Northumberland and demonstrates exemplary community spirit.
