Manganese concentrations are getting too high in the Deseronto water supply.
In a tweet by the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, it was announced that high concentrations of manganese have been detected in the area water supply.
Federal guidelines permit some manganese content in drinking water, however the federal limit of 0.120mg/L was exceeded by the detected rate of 0.148mg/L. The tested samples were taken on July 31.
Manganese is naturally found in some water supplies, but levels in excess of the federal guidelines can pose a health risk to pregnant or breastfeeding mothers along with small infants if exposed over a long period of time. Vulnerable groups are being advised to use alternative water sources temporarily while the situation is dealt with.
