Residents of Stirling-Rawdon will soon be able to come together for free weekly dinners.
The Stirling Community Dinner will offer its first meal with a special BBQ at Rotary Park at 5 p.m. on September 7.
After that there will be weekly meals every Thursday starting at 5 p.m. at St. John Anglican Church on North Street.
A group of volunteers came together earlier this year to begin planning.
“We all recognized that it was more than one church community or one service club could do on its own, just because we are all seeing the same kinds of patterns in terms of a decrease in volunteers and an increase in the experience and maturity of our volunteers. And so we really did think that this was something that we could come together on.”
“But I have been just thrilled at the commitment of the folks who volunteered and at their passion and this being something that we can come together and do. And at the response we’ve had from folks who said, yeah, here’s 20 bucks or I would like to volunteer, how do I get my name on that list? That’s pretty wonderful.”
“We certainly know that the use of the Community Food Cupboard has increased. We certainly know that the price of groceries has gone up. And we also know that there are folks who are still really looking for some fellowship and for some social outings, you know, post-COVID.”
Reverend McMurray made a presentation to Stirling-Rawdon Council Monday asking for some financial support though she did not ask for a specific amount.
Council will make a decision at a meeting in August.
