The Township of Tyendinaga is going cashless at its Waste Transfer Station.
At Wednesday’s meeting, council approved the purchase of a Square system to accept credit and debit cards.
The Waste Transfer Station will stop accepting cash as of January 1, 2024.
Only cash and cheques have been accepted to this point because the transfer station has no power.
The idea of extending hydro to the site was abandoned due to cost but the Square Point of Sale system does not require hydro, only internet, and the internet strength has been determined to be strong.
Township CAO Carla Preston tells Quinte News they should be accepting credit and debit within about a month.
They will continue to accept cash through the end of the year to give people a lot of time to get used to the change.
Preston adds they are open to reassessing the cashless plan next year if necessary, however, she says more often than not, people are not carrying cash and were expecting to pay with credit or debit.
Fees to use the Waste Transfer Site are not changing at this time.
