A public forum on food access will be held in Consecon, in Prince Edward County, on Saturday.
The Consecon Area Ratepayers Association is sponsoring the public forum to discuss possible solutions to, what it calls, the food security problems that exist in Northwest Prince Edward County.
Speakers from PEC Fresh / Prince Edward Learning Centre, Robyn Cakebreak and Kathy Kennedy, will be discussing a Partner Market, which aims to provide stigma-free, in-person delivery access to a variety of produce choices thanks to community volunteers.
The Association says that with limited options for sourcing nutritious groceries in the villages of Consecon or Carrying Place or in the surrounding rural area, residents must travel to shop.
The Association notes that with nearly no public transportation for residents to get to Wellington, Picton, Brighton or Trenton, personal vehicle travel is required.
The forum begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, in Consecon United Church.
Anyone wanting to find out more about how they can serve or be served by this kind of initiative is invited (CARA membership and residence status is not required).
In its statement the Association says:
Did you know that, according to the Community Food Assessment recently released by HPE Public Health, folks reported that “it is generally difficult to find healthy options at food banks and community organizations, and particularly so for convenience stores.” With limited options for sourcing nutritious food (groceries) in the villages of Consecon or Carrying Place or in the surrounding rural area, residents must travel to shop. With near-nil public transportation for residents to get to Wellington, Picton, Brighton or Trenton, personal vehicle travel (and associated fuel/operating costs) is required, as is the approximately one hour of round-trip travel time for every trip made.
