The Municipality of Centre Hastings carried a motion on Wednesday to commit $10,000 every year for the next five years towards the physician recruitment program for the Tri-Area Medical Centre.
The program is in partnership with the Township of Madoc and the Township of Tudor and Cashel.
In a staff report to council, Chief Administrative Officer & clerk Typhany Choinard outlined the growing needs to bring in physicians after losing one physician and another physician announcing their retirement.
The report estimates that, at a minimum, two or three additional physicians are needed to address an immediate need in the area while two more are needed to cover the pending retirement of two physicians in the next three to five years.
As part of the agreement between the townships, Madoc will contribute $5,000 annually for a five year period, Tudor and Cashel will also contribute $5,000 annually and Centre Hastings will contribute $10,000 annually.
Additional incentives will be considered if more than one physician is recruited.
The contributions from all townships will begin in 2024.
