After much discussion, the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board has approved a budget
for 2023-2024.
Monday the board passed a balanced budget of just over $233 million. Last school year’s budget totaled close to $222 million.
When the year’s budget planning started the board faced an almost $5 million shortfall in revenue
and had to delay planned expenditures, cut expenses, move staff around, and cut back on the number of principals and vice-principals as well as coordinators and consultants. The number of staff is down slightly from 1,757 in the last school year to 1,750 this year.
However the board maintains the budget allows for a continued focus on instruction in reading, math, destreaming, skilled trades and technology.
Enrollment has increased from 15,068 students in the 2023-23 year to 15,413 this school year.
