Quinte West council has adopted a new plan to accelerate home building in the area.
Council approved the new Housing Action Plan during their Wednesday meeting, and is applying for funding from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to support seven projects intended to increase availability of housing in Quinte West.
Quinte West is seeking $3,630,000 in funding for the plan, to be delivered over three years.
The largest item in the plan is construction of affordable housing on College Street, with the planned construction resulting in 48 new units. The project is expected to cost $2,155,000.
Another major item in the plan is the development of an E-Permit system, to allow property owners and developers to apply for building permits and zoning applications digitally. The system is intended to speed up the process for these applications and reduce wait times in the approval process.
Other planned projects include introducing incentives for accessory dwelling units, introducing districts with reduced parking requirements for properties, planned funding for green spaces, increasing zoned density in some areas, and special housing provisions for vulnerable groups.
After receiving a presentation on the planned initiatives from Quinte West Director of Community Services and Strategic Partnerships Jaclyn Grimmon and Director of Planning and Development Services Brian Jardine, council voted to adopt the plan with no further debate.
