The fight between the tenants of four Trenton apartment buildings on Sidney Street and Bedford Properties continues with the tenants saying the landlord has not been fulfilling its obligations.
“The lawn has not been mowed. The grass, the weeds, they’re going on a foot long now,” Hands Off Our Homes Quinte West’s Shannon Lawrence tells Quinte News.
“We’ve had tenants get ticks on them and we’ve got kids and pets that are out there. So, it’s a legitimate concern and they are obligated to maintain the lawn.”
Lawrence says other tenants are also facing issues of basic repairs to toilets.
She says they have not received any communication from Bedford.
“(The tenants) have had to basically try to reach out every single day to try to get the superintendent to do anything. Nobody’s getting any communication from Bedford Properties and Sterling Karamar, the property management group, they’ve been giving us the runaround as well.” Lawrence said.
Lawrence says some of the tenants at the apartment buildings have been speaking with contractors who are renovating the vacant apartments to seek clarity on how long the renovations might last.
“They said from start to finish, it takes one month. Yet the renoviction notices say seven months,” Lawrence said.
Hands Off Our Homes Quinte West has requested to speak with Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Steve Clark but have not received word back.
“We actually went to MPP Todd Smith’s office and I left a letter for him, asking him if he could maybe appeal to Mr. Clark to stop by and give us five minutes of his time,” said Lawrence.
The tenants plan to attend next Wednesday’s Quinte West City Council meeting to bring their concerns to council.
Quinte News has made multiple attempts to receive a response from Bedford Properties and have not received any comment.
