Demonstrators gathered at MPP Todd Smith’s office Friday morning over renovictions in Trenton.
Bedford Properties of Mississauga purchased several apartment buildings on Sidney Street near Hamilton Road, earlier this year, and eviction notices have been handed out to many of the residents.
Spokesperson Shannon Lawrence says they are counting on the Landlord Tenant Board to rule in their favour.
“With the evidence we have, we’re more than confident they will. The problem is that’s not going to stop Mark Knodell from Bedford Properties to continue to hassle us. The whole purpose of these notices was to double or triple the annual profits. I can’t see him giving up after one try.”
The group has been told by Smith and other counsel to not leave their apartments and to seek a legal opinion.
Some of the residents took a $4,000 offer by the company to leave.
Under law, landlords must offer a unit back to a tenant at the same rent they were paying, once upgrades are done on a unit.
The group is asking Smith to help arrange a meeting for the 100 plus tenants with Ontario Housing Minister Steve Clarke.
