Belleville council has supported a resolution from the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, that if approved by the provincial government, would restrict the information given to the public regarding municipal and school board candidates and their donors.
Due to privacy and safety concerns the resolution states that only the candidates’ and donors’ names be on public documents, and not addresses and phone numbers.
Council agreed with Councillor Garnet Thompson that the resolution made good sense and Councillor Lisa Anne Chatten had no doubt about her support for the restrictions.
“I actually had a resident that showed up to my home because my address was listed publicly and they were able to find it and come and try and do
a confrontation at my front door.”
Candidate phone numbers and addresses would still be on file with municipal clerk’s departments but not available to the general public.
