Residents of nine local municipalities will have the opportunity to acquire a variety of native tree and shrub seedlings through designated giveaway locations on Saturday.
Maya Navrot, Quinte Conservation’s Outreach and Stewardship Coordinator says trees help to clean air and lock up carbon, slow and filter runoff, and aid in recharging groundwater while reducing flooding.
Navrot adds, “They also help to shade and cool our urban areas while providing habitat for wildlife and improving our general health.”
She adds that ash trees are being attacked pretty hard by the emerald ash borer.
“So we are working with our municipalities to distribute a diversity of native species to replace those ash that are dying out. To help maintain and increase forest cover across the region.”
Navrot says the seedling giveaway has been very popular over the years.
“People come back year after year, excited to add more to their yard. So it’s always nice to hear that they are thriving.”
The tree giveaway will be held on Saturday in nine local municipalities.
