The jobs are out there in the Quinte region but employers have been having a very tough time hiring people.
Bay of Quinte riding MP Ryan Williams told a meeting of the Quinte Economic Development Commission Thursday that employers might want to lower the number of hours of work offered in their jobs to lure at least one age group back into the labour force.
“There’s more people that we’ve found that are 55 plus who seem want to work a certain amount of time and are not looking for 40 hours a week. So instead of looking for one employee for 40 hours try advertising for two part-time positons. That seems to be working for employers across the country.”
Williams also said that many local companies are looking to expand and some official announcements are expected over the next few months. In Quinte West, Quinte Custom Foods in the former Nestle plant is already planning an expansion of 50,000 square feet.
