The Belleville Senators defeated the Cleveland Monsters 3-1 on Saturday night at CAA Arena to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Senators are still within reach of the final AHL playoff spot, but it’s going to be an uphill battle. The Sens now sit two points behind the Laval Rocket for the final place in the north division, with the Monsters one point ahead of them and three regular season games to go.
Saturday’s game started with the Monsters claiming the first goal close to halfway through the first frame, before the Senators evened the score a minute later. The Senators built on their lead with a second goal in the second period, and then a last minute open goal score as the third period drew to a close to seal the deal.
Belleville Senators interim head coach David Bell said the important fact was that they got the win when they needed it.
“It didn’t matter how. We got a result, and we got the win. That’s what we needed,” said Bell.
The Senators play the Rochester Americans on Friday.
