Belleville taxpayers could be facing at least a seven per cent increase in taxes this year.
Council will discuss the Operating Budget, the city’s plan for the day-to-day costs required to deliver all city services to residents, on April 5 and 6.
If approved as is, the proposed Operating Budget would result in the following tax increases:
Belleville Urban +7.02%
Cannifton Urban +7.44%
Cannifton Rural +7.76%
Belleville Rural +8.02%
Mayor Neil Ellis says inflation and other factors are making it a tough budget year for the city. “Municipalities across the board have been facing ever-increasing costs to provide services for residents and Belleville is no exception.”
He adds that he understands there will be concerns with the proposed increase and assures residents they are doing everything they can to bring these numbers down while maintaining the best level of service.
The almost $60 million Capital Budget was finalized in February.
It will have no effect on taxes.
The entire Proposed Operating Budget will be presented to council at the Operating Budget Meeting on April 5-6 starting at 9 a.m.
The meeting can viewed in person at City Hall Council Chambers or online at YouTube.com/BellevilleCityHall.
