Students at Loyalist College have had a chance to test their skills in responding to a simulated multi-casualty incident recently.
The scenario, developed by Loyalist program faculty and simulation team staff, presented students with a series of logistical, tactical, medical and physical challenges to test their foundational skills and prepare them to respond to multi-casualty situations in their future careers. Sirens rang and lights flashed as 41 second-year paramedic students practised assessment, triage, transportation and treatment.
Their efforts were supported by students from Loyalist’s Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training program who worked alongside nursing students receiving patients in a mock hospital, with first-year paramedic students volunteering as victims and patients.

“Experiential learning builds confidence, tests skills and empowers students to tackle real world challenges – that’s why it’s at the heart of a Loyalist College education,” said Sean Monteith, Loyalist College Senior Vice-President, Academic. “As our students pursue rewarding careers as first responders and health care professionals, Loyalist’s advanced simulation equipment and hands-on training opportunities ensure they graduate ready to deliver essential services in our region and beyond.”
