Efforts continue by police services across the country to have more restrictions on when criminal suspects are eligible to be released on bail.
At a Belleville Police Services Board meeting Thursday Chief Mike Callaghan said too many repeat violent offenders are being released on bail and the time is now for reform of the bail system.
“We feel that it’s a very important step moving forward. It’s just an absolute tragedy that we lost 5 officers in I believe it was 4 months in 2022 to bring this to fruition. It’s been a challenge for a while.”
Callaghan says in each case involving the 5 officers killed last year the suspect or suspects were known repeat violent offenders released on bail.
