Plans for a new Rogers cell tower in Prince Edward County are meeting some local opposition.
Local resident Mark Corbin, who lives close to the proposed site, presented a deputation to council during their Tuesday session to prevent the installation of a new 5G cell tower by Rogers on County Road 15, near George’s Road.
During the deputation he showed a petition signed by 22 area residents in opposition to the development.
Corbin’s deputation presented many arguments against the towers, claiming that it would distract drivers, dissuade tourism, affect migratory birds, and generate dangerous radiation for local residents.
Councillor Sam Grosso doubted the claims of harmful radiation coming from the towers.
“Every time they put that cell phone to their head is that not radiation? So I’m not sure what their concern is about a tower that is probably many metres from their homes and not right up to their ear. So I’m not 100% convinced about this.”
Council accepted the deputation, but took no other action at this time.
