Picton Town Hall Farmer’s Market is going to be growing larger.
Prince Edward County Council decided to start the process to expand the farmer’s market with 20 additional spaces for vendors at their council meeting on Tuesday night.
The current space allotted for the market supports 35 vendor spaces, which were completely filled during the 2022 season.
During a motion to council, Councillor Phil St-Jean said they have received even more requests for local growers to participate in the upcoming season and that the current space allotted wouldn’t fit them all.
The motion directs city staff to work with the farmer’s market board to determine the most optimal space within the Market Lane parking lot, next to the established market, to accommodate the expansion.
Councillor Brad Nieman spoke against the motion, with concerns to traffic flow through the area being disrupted by the expanded market space with less parking.
“So this is my concern, is the flow of traffic is now going to be disrupted by doing this as many people are coming down Market Lane,” said Nieman. “We’re going to create a congestion there because there’s going to be no place to go and no place to turn around. So I don’t think that’s the best way to proceed with this.”
The motion was passed after brief debate.
