There may be a lot more snow on the ground than there was just a few days ago but spring is coming.
What hopefully won’t be coming with it is significant spring flooding.
Quinte Conservation Water Resources Manager Christine Phillibert says staff are monitoring the situation and the outlook is good.
This winter we’ve had a lot of snowmelt which has elevated our stream flows but they’re well below what we would expect for a spring flooding condition. And through those melt events a lot of the snowpack has declined. Currently the risks of flooding on our major rivers are low.”
Phillibert says the snowpack in the north which melts and makes its way to the Moira and Napanee Rivers is around normal this year so it won’t have a major effect on water levels here.
One con to the snow melting early is that if it is combined with a dry spring and summer, people who rely on groundwater and wells for their water supply may experience low water levels or even dry wells earlier in the summer.
However, since they can’t predict weather patterns that far in advance, Phillibert says it’s too soon to tell if it will be an extremely dry summer.
