Federal electoral riding changes are coming to the Quinte region and beyond in the spring of next year.
The Ontario Federal Districts Redistribution Commission, which studies population trends every six years, has released its 2022 report.
The Bay of Quinte riding will lose the territory north of Highway 401 and east of the village of Frankford up to the boundary with Stirling-Rawdon to the newly named Hastings-Lennox and Addington-Tyendinaga riding.
The seat redistribution will increase the number of ridings nationwide to 342, up from the current 338.
Bay of Quinte riding MP Ryan Williams says he doesn’t think many more ridings should be added going forward.
“When the population goes up and down the same representative in the future I believe should always be one MP and one MPP to represent this region because this is an economic region and a tourist region.”
Meanwhile the Northumberland-Peterborough South riding will be no more.
There will be a Northumberland riding including Brighton, Cramahe, Cobourg, Port Hope, and Trent Hills with Peterborough riding running north from Alderville First Nation.
The provincial government has yet to decide if it will follow along with the federal riding boundary changes but it has in the past.
