The CFL has taken over operating the Montreal Alouettes franchise.
In a statement, the league says former Alouettes president Mario Cecchini has been appointed interim president.
The Alouettes were purchased three years ago by Belleville native Sid Spiegel and his son-in-law Gary Stern. Stern continues to own and operate businesses in Belleville including Crawford Metals and the Bayview Mall.
Spiegel held 75% of the ownership with Stern the other 25%.
Spiegel passed away in July 2021 leaving the team’s ownership in question eventually prompting Stern to step down as the Als’ CEO last summer.
In a statement the league said, “Multiple parties have already expressed serious interest in purchasing the Alouettes, including individuals, groups and businesses that reside or operate in Montreal or elsewhere in Quebec.”
