The federal government is investing major dollars into long term care in Tyendinaga.
The Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Indigenous Services Vance Badawey announced $30.25 million for an elder care home for the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.
The announcement was made Wednesday morning at the Mohawk Community Centre,
Badeway says its important to look past party lines in order to make this funding announcement.
“It’s all about community. It’s all about you and it’s all about government concentrating on the business of government, not on the business of politics and you being the beneficiary of those efforts as we in the House worked together to ensure to help the safety and comfort of each and every one of you.” Badeway said in his speech.
It will include 128 long term care beds for the First Nations population.
Included in the project are 24-hour nursing and personal care, social activities, food services, and a focus on language, culture, and community.
The project is expected to break ground in July with the deadline set for August 31.
Chief R. Don Maracle of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte says they are already well ahead as they plan to have shovels in the ground.
“In our discussion (we) had with the Ministry of Long Term Care a few weeks ago, we are well ahead of the others that have applied to take advantage of the additional capital, and I’m certain we will meet the August 31 deadline with shovels in the ground.” Chief Maracle told a media scrum.
