The seat that was held by the late Terry Cassidy has been declared vacant.
Quinte West City Council approved the recommendation at its meeting on Wednesday.
The vacancy of the Ward 2 (Sidney) seat now opens up two possibilities for council to decide.
Council can either appoint an eligible elector in the municipality or hold a by-election.
Council will be receiving a report on how to move forward at the February 8, 2023 meeting.
If the decision is to appoint a new councillor, the appointment has to be made by March 26.
If a by-election is determined necessary, the passing of the by-law to call for a by-election must also be made by March 26.
Cassidy passed away on January 14 after a battle with cancer. He was 73.
