A committee of Prince Edward County is recommending council set up a general reserve account for roadwork.
At its Thursday meeting, the Committee of the Whole recommended moving 70% of last year’s Municipal Accommodation Tax, $420,000, into a reserve for roads in this year’s budget. As well, it recommended shifting $280,000 in unspent Tourism Management Plan funding into the same reserve for a total
transfer of $700,000.
County council recently approved a five-year road upgrade plan that calls for significantly higher spending to more quickly improve the condition and
lifespans of roads and streets.
The committee also recommended the transfers to the reserve be reviewed on a yearly basis.
Meanwhile, a staff recommendation that one per cent annually be added to the local tax levy to help pay for capital projects was rejected by the committee.
In a report, staff said a one per cent levy increase for capital based on last year’s budget would translate to just over $28 a year more on a property worth $300,000.
