The Madison Excavating QRD U11s had a busy weekend, travelling to Napanee and competing in their fourth tournament of the 2022-2023 season.
While the team did not advance to the quarterfinals, they went 2-2, and had numerous moments to be proud of. The Madison Excavating QRD U11s started off with a match-up against the Halton Hurricanes, the team who would end up winning the tournament come Sunday afternoon. QRD put forth a strong effort but couldn’t quite secure the win against the Hurricanes. The first period of the game ended without a goal from either side. With the start of the second period, Hewett Tejnor opened up the scoring with a beauty goal on a power play, three minutes in. Halton would answer that goal two minutes later, and follow it up with a second, a minute and a half after that. Yet, QRD was not going down without a fight. A mere fourteen seconds after Halton’s second goal, Everett Brown tied things up. With a two-goal tie going into the third period, it was anyone’s game. The Hurricanes, however, managed to score four minutes in, with the game-winner. In spite of a stellar team effort, the game ended in a 3-2 loss to start the tournament. In net, Hayden Tripp was busy keeping the score close, and earned Player of the Game for his efforts.
Later that evening, QRD would take on the London Jr. Knights. QRD fans will recall that the London Jr. Knights is the team who beat QRD in a shootout during the quarter-final game in the Front Row Classic Tournament in November. Not to mention, QRD went head-to-head with the Knights in December for the semi-final game during the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs 30th Annual Hockey Classic Tournament. Needless to say, the Devils were ready to bring it. At the end of period one, QRD was in the lead due to Everett Brown burying the puck in London’s net four minutes in. It wasn’t until twenty-five seconds before the end of the first that The Knights managed to tie things up briefly at one. In the second period, neither team would score, in spite of some intense and focused effort from both. The third period would bring the game-winning goal from Dylan Chalk. When the final buzzer sounded nine minutes and thirty-seven seconds later, the arena erupted in cheers, QRD taking the 2-1 victory over the London Jr. Knights. Between the pipes, Ben Larmer put on an amazing display of goaltending skills, helped to secure the win, and earned Player of the Game.
Late Saturday afternoon, QRD would go head-to-head with the Markham Waxers. The game resulted in a tough loss of 5-0. Regardless of the score, the QRD crew put forth a strong effort, and persevered through a difficult game. The game included many teachable moments that will benefit the team in later match-ups.
After a difficult loss not even four hours earlier, the QRD boys were ready for a win Saturday evening, and they succeeded, making a huge comeback against the Ottawa Sting. The first period started with a goal from the Sting, which Blake Milne would answer five minutes later. With only one second before the end of the first, Blake Sills scored on a powerplay, giving QRD the lead going into the second period. Three minutes and fifty seconds into the second, Ottawa managed to find the back of the net on a powerplay. Blake Milne helped to swing the score back in QRD’s favour with the game-winner, not even a minute and a half later, off a nice feed from Reed Kavanaugh. Coulter Watson then went on a scoring streak, achieving two consecutive goals, an unbelievable twenty-eight seconds apart. The score was 5-2 for QRD going into the third, where it would stay for the remainder of the game. While QRD did not advance in the tournament, they ended on a strong note. In net, Ben Larmer made some phenomenal saves and helped to secure the win. Players of the Game were Blake Milne and Coulter Watson, who both scored two goals each.
Coach’s Corner with Head Coach Andrew Brown: “We had a weekend full of peaks and valleys. Lots of exciting moments along with adversity that will help our team continue to grow.”
