The roads in Prince Edward County remain closed Christmas Day.
Plows are out and trying to barrel through massive snow drifts on the county’s main roads.
Mayor Steve Ferguson says some of the snow drifts they’re dealing with are even higher than the plow itself and there have been many other challenges when it comes to clearing roads.
“There are about 100 abandoned vehicles that are impeding snow plowing and a bus. For some unknown reason a bus got stuck. First of all a bus was on the road and got stuck. So you can imagine how that has affected the ability to clear the roadways.”
County firefighters, Hastings-Quinte paramedics, and OPP have had to rescue numerous people from stranded vehicles since the storm began Friday afternoon.
Prince Edward County has about 1,100 km of roads to clear with many located in isolated and sparsely populated areas allowing winds to hit especially hard.
Ferguson says the big storm has been tough on everyone, but some more than others.
“You know this is one of those situations where you feel absolutely helpless because we have people at long term care homes and at the hospital who have had to remain on the job because their replacements have not been able to get in to work.”
The county will issue another update on the storm situation at 3 o’clock Christmas afternoon.
