Quinte area farmers are still bringing in the harvest for 2022.
Lloyd Crowe of Grain Growers of Ontario says, “It’s been a really hot dry year, growing season and some places over a month with no rain,
but a lot of people feel the harvest of the wheat is the best they’ve ever had.”
In fact, Crowe says, that was the case for him.
He pointed out that the corn crop got hurt by the dryness.
“Quite a few farmers are disappointed with the yield, unless they’ve got really good deep land and in Prince Edward County there’s not an abundance of it, but there’s some.”
He added noted concerns about fertilizer supply.
“Fertilizer shortages and the high price of fertilizer. There seems to be some concern about the availability of corn and soybeans and wheat to supply the hungry world.”
Locally he noted, “There’s a few lingering acres that need to get off the next week or so. We’re looking for some freezing weather, ground completely freezes and then you just ride (drive) on top of it.”
