The holiday season comes alive this weekend in Marmora.
It starts Thursday evening (December 1) with “Frolicking on Forsyth,” featuring late night shopping, a vendors market, free hot dogs, hot chocolate and popcorn, children’s stories at the library and more in the downtown core.
Light Up Marmora’s Mary Provost says there is no charge to attend the event but donations will be accepted as the group continues to fundraise to purchase holiday lights for the town.
“We have, this week, 19 lights being installed on Forsyth Street and we will continue until all of Highway 7 and Forsyth Street as far as the Brewer’s Retail, will be lit.”
The event runs from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and will feature a visit from two special guests.
Santa Claus will be there.
Kids can also drop off their letters to Santa.
And Betty Ellis will be there to flip the switch on the light display at the parkette.
Provost says Ellis, now in her 80s, has donated her light collection after elaborately decorating her home for more than 30 years and welcoming thousands of visitors.
“She said one night she had 23 busloads come in. She would serve them goodies and hot chocolate and she had over 40,000 lights. And she could have sold them but, instead of that, she has donated lights and decorations to the Marmora Lions Club, Crowe Valley Lions Club and to Light Up Marmora.”
The Marmora Santa Claus Parade continues the holiday spirit Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
The parade route will start at the fairgrounds and disband at the old fire station on Bursthall Street.
At the conclusion of the parade, parents are invited to bring the kids to the Marmora Community Centre for hot chocolate and a hot dog and of course, to meet Santa Claus!
