The province’s Special Investigations Unit will not be laying charges against a Quinte West OPP officer in connection with a July incident at a local restaurant.
Police were called late on July 30 after an inebriated man at Jack Tucker’s Bar and Grill on Wallbridge Loyalist Road assaulted his girlfriend and was fighting other patrons.
The first officer on scene tackled the 29-year-old man in the parking lot and struggled with him before eventually handcuffing and arresting him.
The man was taken to the police station and the next morning was transported to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured right elbow.
The SIU invoked its mandate, however, after an investigation, Director Joseph Martino determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence related to the arrest.
The case has been closed.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
