Distraction Theft
On November 22, 2022 at 4:06 p.m., Belleville police took a report of a distraction theft which occurred at a North Front Street grocery store. An unsuspecting female was grocery shopping while being closely followed by a male and a female. As the victim was checking out, the male stood by, paying close attention to her as she was paying, and proceeded to follow her in the parking lot towards her vehicle. As the victim got inside her car, the female thief approached her and advised that there was an issue with the victim’s back tire. While the victim was out checking on the issue, the male entered the vehicle, stole the victim’s wallet, and fled. Several thousand dollars were stolen using the victim’s credit and debit cards, and police are continuing to investigate the matter.
Belleville police are urging citizens to be aware of similar potential thefts, especially during the busy holiday season. Be mindful of your surroundings and lock your vehicles should you have to exit them for any reason.
