A new service for caregivers and people living with dementia is being offered at public libraries in Belleville and Quinte West.
Cognitive Care Kits are now available for borrowing at Belleville Public Library and Quinte West Public Library.
In partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Hastings-Prince Edward, funding was received from the United Way Hastings-Prince Edward through an Innovation Grant in June 2022.
Cognitive Care Kits are intended to assist caregivers in engaging people living with dementia.
The kits include conversation starters, large print books, adult jigsaw puzzles, colouring pages, and other activities.
Chief librarian at Belleville Public Library Trevor Pross comments to Quinte News.
“Picture books and stuff that are, you know, aimed at an adult audience. It’s not children’s stuff. And there’s activities, sort of games and things that are all designed to work well with people that are suffering from dementia.”
Chair of Belleville Public Library Board, Councillor Paul Carr comments, “We are pleased to be working with Quinte West Public Library, the Alzheimer Society and United Way on this new collection of materials for our patrons to borrow. The Cognitive Care Kits will be an excellent resource and provide much-needed support for families with loved ones who are suffering from dementia.”
The kits are loaned out for three weeks and are available at both the Belleville and Trenton library locations.
