UPDATE: The westbound 401 has now reopened.
Ontario Provincial Police closed the westbound lanes of the 401 at Deseronto Road after a snowplow ran into an overpass bridge with its sanding box up.
The box was ripped off the truck and lodged between the bridge and the road, spilling sand around it.
East Region and Central Region OPP are reporting large numbers of car accidents related to recent snowfall, with multiple calls relating to cars ending up in ditches along major highways. Police are asking drivers to slow down and drive carefully in the winter weather.
Environment Canada says flurries are forecast to last throughout the day in the Quinte Region, interrupted by brief bouts of heavy snowfall which may reduce visibility.
