Prince Edward County council took a stance against potential provincial changes to how municipalities are governed.
The Ontario government has introduced the Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act, which would grant mayors additional authority and powers greater than those granted to municipal councillors.
Councillor Nieman proposed the motion that council oppose these changes, and make it known to the provincial government that they do.
“The people voted council in to be their voice. And the Strong Mayors Act will take that voice away,” said Councillor Nieman.
Council voted unanimously to adopt the motion to oppose the Strong Mayors, Building Homes Act.
The new powers are currently only proposed for Toronto and Ottawa mayors.
