While students, teachers, custodians and other education staff returned to work Tuesday it’s back to the bargaining table for the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the provincial government.
Appearing on MIX97 Tuesday morning the President of CUPE’s Ontario School Board Council of Unions Laura Walton said she was a bit surprised Doug Ford decided to rescind the legislation imposing a contract and making the strike illegal.
“I’ve never been prouder to be a worker in Ontario. You know we saw a government coming in with some draconian legislation and I proudly saw men and women go out to the streets and protest for workers’ rights and students’ rights.”
Walton said she was overwhelmed by the support her members have received from labour organizations from around the world and that had an effect on Ford’s attitude.
“It’s a direct relation to the labour movement coming together, including folks that do endorse him saying (to Ford) you overstepped, you need to back off.”
