Ontario’s legislature began sitting at 5 a.m. Tuesday morning in order to speed up passage of a new law imposing contracts on the province’s education workers and banning the planned strike for Friday.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees, representing approximately 55,000 education workers, says its members will still walk off the job despite the government’s move.
Meanwhile Director of Education for the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board Katherine MacIver says should CUPE workers begin a strike, schools will not be able to operate safely and will be closed.
Remote learning will be offered for the duration of any job action.
Close to 600 CUPE members are employed with the the Hastings Prince Edward School Board.
Schools with the Kawartha Pine Ridge public and Peterborough Victoria Catholic boards will also be closed. There has been no announcement from the Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic board.
