Twelve teams of participants including police, firefighters, and paramedics have signed up for this year’s Hastings and Prince Edward Humane Society Wiggle Waggle Walkathon to raise funds to help animals in need.
The event will be taking place at West Zwick’s Park on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This is the first year participants will be allowed to register in teams.
“We thought having teams would help our existing walkers encourage their friends, family and colleagues to join them and maybe get some friendly competition going,” said Tracey Bunnett, chair of HSHPE’s fundraising committee.
Of the 12 currently registered teams, four are from Belleville’s first responders.
Belleville Police Services have two teams registered, BPS Old Dogs with team members Chris Barry, Sheri Meeks and Mike Callaghan and their dogs, and Mutts and Jeff with team members Kyle King, Matt Sweet, Jeff Smith, Greg Kendall, Jesse McInroy and their dogs. Belleville Fire and Emergency Service’s team is the BFES Barkers with team members Monique Belair, Shane McGrath, Don Carter and Lisa Gilmour and their dogs. Hastings Quinte Paramedic’s team, HQPS Purr-a-medics, is led by Carl Bowker.
Those not participating in the walk are still encouraged to come to the event. There will be dog demonstrations, vendors, food and live music.
