Friday is National Truth and Reconciliation Day as Canadians coast to coast reflect on the lives lost and families harmed as part of the residential school system that took indigenous children from their homes in an attempt to educate and assimilate them into mainstream Christian society.
The City of Belleville will be hosting a special Truth and Reconciliation event in Market Square behind city hall Friday.
Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee councillor Sean Kelly says the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte will be a big part of the event.
“Indigenous leaders in Tyendinaga have stepped up. They’ve said to the committee how can we help and our program is made up of indigenous knowledge and they’re going to be sharing their gifts as part of our education day.”
Belleville’s National Truth and Reconciliation event begins at 11:45 Friday in Market Square. People are being asked to wear orange.
